Indian Head Massage

Release stress in the tissues, muscles and joints of the head, face, neck and shoulders

Indian Head Massage is based on the Ayurvedic system of healing which has been practiced in India for over a thousand years.  It began as the way to keep long hair in beautiful condition and has become a part of daily life.  The word shampoo comes from the Hindi word 'champi' – to be 'champied' is to have one’s head massaged.

The aim of an Indian Head Massage treatment is to release the stress that has accumulated in the tissues, muscles and joints of the head, face, neck and shoulders. Ayurvedic Indian Head Massage includes the use of warm oils spread through the hair - although the use of oil on the hair is optional!

What happens during a treatment?
You will sit in a chair either fully dressed (wear a loose t-shirt), or with your top removed and upper body wrapped in a towel. The therapist will move around you using a range of deep kneading and compression movements over the neck, shoulder and scalp areas, and pressure points on the face to clear congestion. Your head will be supported at all times so you can relax.

Indian head massage should be avoided if you have had recent surgery, or a head, neck or spine injury; a history of thrombosis or embolism; spondylitis or spondylosis; epilepsy. Always make sure that you avoid alcohol for at least five hours before the treatment.

It is important that you tell the therapist if you are, or might be pregnant – Indian Head Massage treatments can only take place after your 12 week scan, if all is going well.

Children
Indian Head Massage is good for children who may be more reluctant to try traditional massage.  It can help to relieve stress and help improve sleep.
